As the cloud of smog that hangs over the city first thing in the morning so clearly demonstrates, L.A. is primarily a city of cars, revolving on an axis of freeways. Though it remains possible to get about much of Hollywood on foot without too much hassle, you are advised to arrive with some advance knowledge of either the city’s public transportation system or its many car hire firms. Be careful about stepping off pavements (sidewalks): drivers consider themselves to have priority in almost every instance.
